Egypt will hold presidential elections before the end of the year, Gen. Mamduh Shahin, a member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, said on Wednesday.
Presidential elections should take place one to two months after a parliamentary vote, which is expected in September.
Earlier on Wednesday the council announced a constitutional declaration that will act as the country's main set of laws during a transitional period.
This interim constitution will be in effect until a new head of state and a new government is elected.
The Supreme Council repealed the old constitution on February 13, soon after President Hosni Mubarak was forced to step down by a popular uprising.
