A new expedition comprising Alexander Samokutyaev (foreground), NASA astronaut Ronald Garan (background) and cosmonaut Andrei Borisenko went off on a six-month space mission to the International Space Station.
The lengthy process of donning spacesuits ended at about midnight. Photo: Federal Space Agency personnel helping ship commander Alexander Samokutyaev into a spacesuit.
After a spacesuit check, the cosmonauts spent about half an hour chatting with relatives and then talking with members of the state commission and honorary guests who wished them a good flight, successful completion of their mission and a safe return to the Earth.
“When the earth begins to tremble and you see this man-made sun rising into a night sky, it is a staggering sight,” commented sci-fi writer Sergei Lukyanenko, who was in Baikonur at launch time as part of a delegation of special guests.
