Last weekend the Italian city of Gaeta hosted a historical regatta event attended by representatives of the four ancient Italian Maritime Republics of Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice.

Austere-looking Amalfian knights wearing black cloaks with white Maltese crosses walked the streets of Gaeta.

Adults and children took part in the festive procession. The youngest participant travelled in a medieval wooden stroller.

The descendants of officers of the Republic of Pisa hoisted the ancient banner of their city.

Then came the spearmen and crossbowmen from Pisa with white crosses embroidered on red garments.

The Genoans marched in a column with their traditional banner of a red cross against the white background.

The Moors carried a palanquin on their shoulders with a noble lady from the Republic of Venice which once controlled the entire Mediterranean Sea.

This historical parade in Gaeta was followed by clowns on stilts to keep onlookers entertained prior to the actual boat race.

The heads of the four maritime republics waited for the official announcement of the winner.

Genoa’s athletes were named the historical regatta winners to tremendous applause and yells of joy.
