Jordanian King Abdullah II is to establish a special committee to review the country's constitution in a bid to put an end to anti-governmental protests, Al Jazeera said on Wednesday.

Inspired by recent uprisings across the Middle East, opposition groups and Jordan's powerful Islmanist movement have demanding sweeping parliamentary and electoral reforms.

Abdullah ordered Jordanian Prime Minister Ahmad Lawzi to head the committee, which aims to "look into constitutional amendments that would be suitable for Jordan in the present and future."

In a letter to Lawzi, the king said the country's laws on political parties and electoral procedures needed to be reviewed.

Al Jazeera quoted Jordanian experts as saying that the political situation in the country could improve only after the king's responsibilities and executive power are reviewed.

In early February Abdullah dismissed the government and pledged economic and political reforms to prevent social tension in the country from escalating.
