Rescuers have extinguished 20 wildfires on an area of 800 hectares in the Russian Far East, a local Emergencies Ministry spokesman has said.

Nine wildfires were registered on Friday in the Khabarovsk Territory, six in the Amur Region and five in the Jewish Autonomous Region, the spokesman said. All the fires have now been put out, he said, adding that about 270 firefighters were involved in extinguishing the blazes.

A fire prevention regime has been introduced in 12 districts across the Amur Region because of a high fire danger, the spokesman said.

In the summer of 2010, an enormous heat wave in Central Russia caused massive wildfires across the country, which killed 62 people and left thousands homeless.
