Fountain season opened at Peterhof Palace on May 1.

For the second time, fountain season has opened a week earlier. This schedule will accommodate visitors to St. Petersburg during the May holidays to enjoy the Grand Cascade and other smaller fountains.

The main fountain, Samson and the Lion, was restored and regilded over the winter.

It took restorers over three and a half months to restore the statue and cover it with a double layer of gold leaf. Almost a kilogram of the precious metal was used to cover the five-ton statue.

Almost 300 years ago Peter the Great ordered a park to be designed with bronze and stone statues. The fountain technology has never been modified since.

Today, water still flows to the fountains from the Ropshino Heights.

Over 25,000 cubic meters of water shoot skyward under natural pressure.

The Grand Cascade is the main attraction in the enormous fountain complex at Peterhof Palace.

All in all there are more than 150 large and small fountains and four cascades in the park.
