A sand sculpture festival opened April 30 at Moscow’s National Exhibition Center features replicas of world-famous fountains.

The sand sculptures include a copy of the famous Mannekin Pis fountain from Brussels, Belgium, The Giant’s Head fountain from Austria, as well as fountains from Peterhof, Versailles, Singapore and Abu Dhabi.

Festival organizer Oleg Chernyshov says Russian sculptors have reinvented a resin substance used in coating wooden ship hulls. The resin mix fixes the sculpted shape.

Sand and water are initially used to make the fountains. They are compacted inside wooden crates and then covered with a special resin mix. Photo: A sand copy of the Merlion fountain, the symbol of Singapore.

Pipes inside the sculpture allow the water stream to reach a substantial height.

The sculptors had to work quickly because Moscow was still covered with snow in early April. It took two weeks to complete all the sculptures.
