Pre-tests for maroon beret eligibility were conducted at the Yermak special operations forces base in Gorny village. Servicemen from the Russian Interior Ministry’s Siberian regional command spec ops and reconnaissance units were put to the test.

The maroon beret is worn by the spec ops troops and only issued to the best of the best.

The path to the beret included a series of tests.

One of the biggest tests is a traditional cross-country march.

Once the march was over, the servicemen were put through a series of other tests – an obstacle course, assault, weapon-wielding and bare-handed drills, and hand-to-hand combat.

In the obstacle course, the spec ops troops had to cross a “contaminated” area wearing gas masks.

The tests were used to assess the troops’ physical and mental fitness levels.

The interior troops conduct a variety of missions dealing with global threats, including terrorism, extremism and organized crime.
