Egypt's authorities have ordered the detention of Suzanne Mubarak, the wife of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, pending further investigation of corruption allegations, the Mena state news agency reported on Friday.

The former First Lady and her husband have been questioned over suspicions that they illegally amassed their wealth.

Suzanne Mubarak, 70, will be held in a Cairo prison for 15 days.

Mubarak stepped down in February after weeks of protests against his 30-year rule.

The 83-year-old is currently being treated for heart problems in a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

He is also being investigated for his involvement in the killings of anti-government protesters.

Egypt's former interior minister, Habib al-Adli, was jailed for 12 years on charges of money-laundering and profiteering last week.

He faces separate charges of ordering troops to fire at demonstrators.

Human rights groups say about 800 people were killed during the protests that led to Mubarak's downfall.

Mubarak and his family have been banned from leaving the country and their assets have been frozen.
