Egyptian ex- President Hosni Mubarak has turned over all his assets to the government in an attempt to avoid jail, the Al Ahram weekly said on Tuesday.

On Friday, Mubarak's wife, Suzanne was released on bail after she had handed over all of her assets - some $3.4 million and a Cairo villa - to the state.

Earlier in the day Egypt's al-Shorouk daily said that Mubarak was "drafting a letter which will be shown on Egyptian and Arabic channels, apologizing on behalf of himself and his family for any offence caused to the people."

The ousted leader will also beg for pardon "for any behavior that may have stemmed from false information passed to him by his advisers."

Mubarak, 83, resigned on February 11 following an 18-day uprising that resulted in the deaths of more than 800 people. The military council that took power following Mubarak's resignation has pledged to bring to justice all former regime officials found guilty of abusing their powers.

The former president and his wife are currently under arrest in a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh after both of them suffered heart attacks during interrogation as part of a graft probe.
