New York State Supreme Court greed on Thursday to release on bail former IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn who was charged with sexually assaulting a hotel maid last weekend in New York.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev held a large news conference for the first time in his three-year term.

During the conference, Dmitry Medvedev commented on a number of issues: the trial of former oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Osama bin Laden’s death, gas agreements with Ukraine, the failed Rosneft-BP deal and a possible UN Security Council resolution on Syria.

The area of forest and peat bog fires grew almost 50% from Thursday, to 66,000 hectares. A total of 30 new fire hotspots appeared, the Russian emergencies ministry said on Friday.

The 64th Cannes film festival was overshadowed by a scandal involving Danish director Lars Von Trier, who announced his support for Hitler while presenting his competition movie "Melancholia." Though Von Trier immediately added that he his statement was not directed against Jews or the memory of Holocaust, he was barred from appearing at the festival’s events. His movie was not removed from the competition, though.

Finland’s national hockey team became world champions after defeating Sweden in the final.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visited Belarusian capital Minsk on Thursday to attend meetings of several post-Soviet political and economic cooperation bodies.
