Maria Sharapova of Russia has reached the women's quarterfinals of the French Open with a win over Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska.
In a match on Monday that lasted two hours, Sharapova (No. 7) defeated twelfth-seeded Radwanska in two sets 7-6, 7-5.
"This tournament [the French Open] has a rich history, and I always said that to win here is the biggest challenge of my career," Sharapova said in an interview after her Monday win.
"I train a lot and try to improve my game on clay courts," she added.
Sharapova is a three-time Grand Slam winner, and Roland Garros remains the only major title she has never won.
Sharapova's next opponent in her battle for the spot in the semis will be Germany's Andrea Petkovic (No. 15), who beat Maria Kirilenko of Russia (No. 25) on Monday 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
