Russia’s preeminent fashion designer Slava Zaitsev has brought his winter 2011-2012 collection to New York. The public was overwhelmed by a riot of color a la Russe with a Tartar hint, kaftans, valenki felt boots and dresses made from Pavlovo-Posad shawls.
“Many of my clients dress just like me,” Zaitsev said. “A lot of them have ordered quilt coats, jerseys, suits and evening gowns from this collection.”
His winter 2011-2012 collection is inspired by folklore. “These colors make one want to live, because they are a reflection of the amazing richness of Russian nature,” the fashion designer said.
The ladies’ headwear on show may resemble Monomakh's Cap or the helmets of ancient Russian knights, but they are made of natural fibers with beaded detailing.
Working on this collection, Zaitsev studied national dresses in the Voronezh museum, which he admires for their variety of designs and colors. He says his collection is “a winter’s memory of a bright summer.”
The fashion designer says there are no signs of feminine aggression or sexual appeal in his collection, as there are no mini skirts, knee-high boots or glam nightclub attire.
“This collection is suffused with happiness. When you put on these dresses, you feel the joy of life,” the designer said.
