Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on Monday establishing June 6 as the Day of the Russian Language.
"To declare the Day of the Russian Language and celebrate it annually on June 6, the birthday of the great Russian poet, founder of the modern Russian literary language, Alexander Pushkin," the presidential decree said.
The decree also says it was passed "with the goal to preserve, support and develop the Russian language as an all-nation heritage of peoples of the Russian Federation, a tool for international communication and an inseparable part of cultural and spiritual world heritage."
The decree came into force immediately after being signed by the president.
