Anna Kournikova was born in a family of athletes: her farther was a professional wrestler, and her mother was a tennis coach. Anna got her first tennis racquet at the age of 5 and participated in her first tennis competition at the age of 7.
In 1989, Kournikova won a tennis tournament in Moscow. She got a scholarship to train at Nick Bollettieri’s celebrated tennis academy in Bradenton, Florida. In 1991, she moved to the United States with her mother.
Anna has several times been number 1 in the world in doubles (the only Russian player who has ever received this title), she also won Grand Slam titles in doubles in the Australia Open twice, partnering with Martina Hingis.
In September 2010, Anna Kournikova received U.S. citizenship. She later admitted she had always felt half-Russian, half-American.
