The Libyan opposition has requested Russia to join the contact group on Libya, the presidential envoy to Africa, Mikhail Margelov, said on Friday.
"I received a request from the National Transitional Council that Russia join the contact group. The council asked Russia about this, I passed this on to the president of Russia and am waiting for further instructions," Margelov, who heads the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Russian Parliament's upper house, said during a press conference at RIA Novosti.
On Tuesday, Margelov visited the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, for talks with the leaders of the Libyan opposition in the National Transitional Council.
