Armed police and the military clashed with local residents in Egypt's Salum town near the border with Libya, the Egyptian media said on Saturday.
Locals set fire to a police station and four police cars. Police reinforcement was sent to the area.
Media reports also said three Salum residents were injured in the clashes.
Riots broke out after the military shot dead an alleged local smuggler trying to illegally cross the Egyptian border by sea.
