Belarusian border guards have not detained opposition leader Stanislav Shushkevich, a former chairman of the country's Supreme Council, on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border, spokesman for the Belarusian State Border Committee said on Sunday.
Earlier in the day Shushkevich told RIA Novosti that he was detained along with 12 students of the European Humanities University on the Belarusian territory after customs clearance.
However the Belarusian State Border Committee dismissed the report. "After document check Shushkevich was put back on a train," spokesman Alexander Khischrnko said. "Detention and document check should be discerned," he added.
Shushkevich heads the opposition Social Democratic Party. The information on the alleged detention comes ahead of a planned protest rally on Sunday, when Belarus celebrates its Independence Day.
