Akhmed Wali Karzai, brother of the Afghan President Hamid Karzai, was killed in the city of Kandahar on Tuesday, a source in the Afghan Interior Ministry said.
Karzai, a member of the Kandahar Provincial Council, was killed at home by one of his bodyguards.
No further details are yet available.
Karzai was one of the key figures in the local Kandahar administration, and was a controversial figure. Western media reports had accused him of links to local drug lords and the CIA.
Several attempts had already been made on his life.
