First-time visitors to the cathedral can be overwhelmed by all the frescoes and decorative details. It’s difficult to appreciate them all in one visit.
The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, better known as St. Basil's Cathedral, was commissioned by Tsar Ivan the Terrible and built in the middle of the 16th century to commemorate Russia’s victory over Kazan, which was then part of the Golden Horde.
The exhibition is being held as part of the celebration marking St. Basil’s 450th anniversary. The celebration began on July 12 and will run for six months through October 14.
