On July 10, the double-decked riverboat Bulgaria, built in Czechoslovakia in 1955, sank during a thunderstorm three kilometers off the bank of the Kuibyshev Reservoir in Tatarstan. The ship was traveling from Bolgar to Kazan. An operation to raise the sunken vessel began on July 21. The next day, the boat could be seen above water.

The riverboat will be taken to a dry dock on Monday, Igor Panshin, head of the Emergencies Ministry’s Volga regional center, told journalists. The ship has now been raised above water, allowing divers to continue their search and pump out water.

The boat was towed alongside the dock in Kirelskoye Cove. Emergencies Ministry workers sealed the starboard side the boat was resting on, and pumped out the water.
The boat will be scrapped, as it is beyond repair. Experts say they “don’t recall any other salvage operation that lifted such a large boat from such a depth.”
