Amy Winehouse, who was said to have suffered from addiction problems for years, was found dead on Saturday in her apartment in Camden, in north London. She was 27.
During her life, the Grammy Award-winning jazz singer was often compared to Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone; Winehouse’s early death puts her in the company of other legendary musicians who died at the age of 27, including Kurt Cobain, Brian Jones, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. The late singer’s parents, Mitchell and Janis, as well as other members of her family stopped by on Monday to thank all of Amy’s friends and fans for their devotion and support.
Amy Winehouse’s parents also thanked reporters working at the site. "I know a lot of you, we've been together for five or six years and I know you've got a job to do. I'm glad you're all here anyway," her father said. "And as to you people in the street, I can't tell you what this means to us. It really is making this a lot easier. We're devastated and I am speechless. Amy was about one thing and that was love. Her whole life was devoted to her family and friends and to you guys as well," he said.
Amy Winehouse is believed to have died of a drug overdose, but the official cause of death is expected to be disclosed later this week, following autopsy results.
The early death of Amy Winehouse has drastically increased demand for her singles and albums. Sales of her singles have increased by 23 times, and those of her album, "Back to Black," by 37 times.
