A couple from Omsk, West Siberia, have named their newborn daughter after President Dmitry Medvedev, local media said on Wednesday.
The girl is called Medmia. The name was created from the first letters of the president's full name, Medvedev Dmitry Anatolyevich.
"Medvedev is Russia's first really liberal and democratic president... If a boy was born, we would have named him Dmitry." Medmia's father, Sergei, said.
"Medmia is a very beautiful female name," he said. The baby has yet to comment.
The Soviet tradition of naming children after political leaders and significant events led to such names as Vladilena (after Vladimir Lenin), Trolen (Trotsky&Lenin), Leninid (Lenin's ideas), Compart (Communist Party), Eric (Electrification, Radio, Industrialization, Communism), Niserkha (Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev) and many others.
