The United Arab Emirates are in talks with Russia over supplies of nuclear fuel for its first nuclear power plant, which will be launched in 2017, the UAE English-language newspaper National quoted on Saturday Hamad Al Kaabi, UAE permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency, as saying.
In July, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), which is in charge for building the nuclear power plant, located some 300 kilometres from Abu Dhabi, announced a tender offer to sign in 2012 a 15-year agreement on nuclear fuel supplies.
The UAE have already signed cooperation agreements which allow them to make deals over supplies of nuclear material with the United States, Great Britain, Australia, Japan, France and South Korea.
Russia and the UAE are currently in talks to sign a similar contract, Al Kaabi said.
