At least two Afghan guards died and four were wounded when a suicide bomber detonated a truck bomb near the entrance to a heavily-guarded U.S.-run military-civilian compound in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, global media said.
The attack took place in Gardez, the capital of the eastern Paktia province bordering Pakistan.
The truck bomber sped through an outer gate, then blew up the truck when he came under fire at a second gate, said Abdul Ihay Atrafi, an Afghan border police commander.
The compound houses small groups of troops and civilian experts trying to help rebuild the war-torn country and enhance security. The groups are known as Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRT) and are based across Afghanistan.
The Taliban, the group leading an escalating 10-year insurgency, claimed responsibility for the attack.
