NATO strongly condemns the attacks targeting the UN offices in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, and extends the deepest sympathy to the UN personnel who were injured, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Saturday.
In a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Rasmussen extended, on behalf of the Alliance, the deepest condolences to the victims' families.
"I was appalled to hear about the terrible bomb attacks," he wrote.
"NATO strongly condemns these dreadful and heinous acts, which deliberately target UN staff who are devoting their lives to help others."
At least 19 people were killed and dozens injured in a suicide car bombing at the UN headquarters.
Authorities said the death toll could rise as hospitals continue to treat at least 60 people wounded in the blast.
A man who identified himself as a spokesman for Boko Haram, an extremist Islamic group in Nigeria, said the group was responsible for the bombing.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon said the attack was "an assault on those who devote their lives to helping others".
