Vladivostok held a ceremony to send off a sixth Pacific Fleet task force to the Gulf of Aden on Monday where it will escort merchant ships as part of an international anti-piracy operation.
Apart from an Udaloy class destroyer, RFS Admiral Panteleyev, the task force includes a supply tanker, and a rescue tugboat. The destroyer carries a unit of naval infantry on board.
The Pacific Fleet ships will relieve a Northern Fleet task force led by another Udaloy class destroyer, RFS Severomorsk, which has been in the area since June
In spring 2009, Admiral Panteleyev led a task force that was on an anti-piracy mission in the Indian Ocean off the Horn of Africa. In May 2011, the warship participated in anti-pirate drills jointly with the navies of Singapore and Indonesia.
