The Cathedral of the Intercession of Our Lady on the Moat (its original name) was erected in 1555-1561 on the order of Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible near Spassky Gate of the Kremlin. Russian builders Barma and Postnik are considered its architects. The cathedral is a votive memorial church built on a vow made by Ivan before the Kazan campaign of 1552.
