The Dendrarium botanical garden in Sochi has received a new and unusual tenant: an albino hedgehog. It has been named Snezhok (Snowball) in honor of the Winter Olympics that the city will host in 2014, the garden’s director, Alexander Kornilov, told RIA Novosti.
The hedgehog is completely white – an albino, which is a rare mutation. These animals cannot survive in the wild because they have a fairly weak immune system and cannot defend themselves against predators, Kornilov explained.
At the moment, it is the only hedgehog in the park, but the staff are planning to find it a mate.
