Queen Margrethe II, her husband Henrik, the Prince Consort of Denmark, and their elder son and heir apparent Frederik, the Crown Prince of Denmark, arrived in Russia on September 6 on an invitation from President Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev paid a state visit to Denmark in April 2010.

Member states of the Arctic Council, the 8-nation intergovernmental forum involving Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States, have been working on a new approach towards the exploration of the Arctic. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin also met with Queen Margrethe II.
During the talks, the prime minister recalled his visit to Denmark in April and noted that Queen Margrethe’s visit to Russia would include a trip to St. Petersburg, where she would visit graves of the Romanov tsar family in the Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral.
Queen Margrethe said in her turn that she was very happy to visit Russia. She said she was pleased that Russia and Denmark had “positive contacts.”
Queen Margrethe attended the opening ceremony of the second unit of the Danish company Grundfos’ pump production plant in the town of Istra, to the west of Moscow.
