French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron arrived Libya on Thursday, Sky News said citing sources in Downing Street.

This is the first trip by European leaders since Libyan rebels ousted strongman Muammar Gaddafi. Cameron and Sarkozy were instrumental in engineering the NATO bombing campaign that aided fighters in toppling Gaddafi and his forces.

The visit is likely to spark big celebrations in honor the two men who fostered the Libyan revolution. It is also expected that Cameron will fly to Benghazi, the cradle of the resistance and still the base for the National Transitional Council.

The two leaders have been advised that the security situation is safe enough for them to travel to the city that only three weeks ago appeared to be under the iron grip of Gaddafi.

William Hague, the British Foreign Secretary, is also on the visit, along with French intellectual Bernard-Henry Levy, seen by many as a driving force behind the French decision to take military action against Gaddafi, the Guardian said.
