Libyan provisional government troops on Thursday entered the city of Sirte, the hometown of Muammar Gaddafi, a National Transitional Council (NTC) military official said.
The official said he expected the city to "be liberated" in the near future and said that "street fighting" with forces loyal to deposed Libyan leader Gaddafi was taking place.
Forces loyal to Gaddafi still control Beni Walid, 90 miles south of Tripoli.
