Two explosions rocked Dagestan’s capital Makhachkala shortly after midnight on Wednesday. The blasts came several minutes apart. Initial information shows that the bombs were planted under or near parked cars.

One person was killed and 61 injured.

Thirty-two of the injured have been hospitalized.

The Investigative Committee said the first improvised explosive device, equivalent to some 3 kilograms of TNT, went off 20 minutes past midnight, Moscow time.

The second bomb, filled with fragments of metal to inflict more damage, was equivalent in force to 35-40 kg of TNT.

Investigators in the republic have opened a criminal case under Article 205 of the Criminal Code, “Terrorist Attack.”

The police have drawn up a list of suspects who may have been involved in organizing and carrying out the attacks.

Dagestani President Magomedsalam Magomedov has cut short his visit to Moscow and is on his way back to Makhachkala, where he will meet with security officials to discuss the attacks.
