The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has resumed cooperation with Libya, the head of the organization said on Thursday.

On March 2, Unesco stopped working with the Libya's authorities over human rights abuses carried out by the now-deposed regime of Muammar Gaddafi.

"I welcome the return of Libya to the international community," Unesco head Irina Bokova said.

"We stand ready to help the Libyan people in advancing human dignity and rights as part of a new era. May the raising of the new flag of Libya alongside those of UNESCO's other member states herald the dawn of an age of reconciliation and recovery for the country."

"Our organization is looking forward to assisting Libya in the fields of education, culture, science and media development to sustain their aspirations and efforts promoting human rights, freedom of expression, justice and women's empowerment," she added.

Libya's National Transitional Council (NTC) on Monday agreed on the makeup of an interim cabinet. NTC current chief Mahmoud Jibril has been named interim prime minister. There will be a total of 22 ministries in the new government.
