Russians won gold in men’s saber team event at the 2011 World Fencing Championship, held in Italy’s Catania between October 8 and 16.
Russia’s Nikolai Kovalyov, Veniamin Reshetnikov, Alexei Yakimenko and Pavel Bykov defeated in the final the team from Belarus 45-29.
Yakimenko, the captain of the Russian team, said it was very difficult psychologically to win the gold of the world championship.
“Psychologically it was very difficult to win this gold considering our unsuccessful performance in personal competitions at the championship,” the five-time world champion said.
“However, we simply had to do this. It was not only about gold medals, it was about our passes for the Summer Olympic Games in London,” Yakimenko added.
Earlier at the championship, the Russians won gold in women’s foil team event beating in the final last year’s world champions from Italy.
