A suicide car bomber attacked a police convoy on Friday night in Spin Boldak district, Kandahar province, a source in the Afghan Internal Affairs Ministry said.
According to the source, the bomber, driving a Toyota Corolla, rammed the convoy killing five border policemen and a child.
Another four people, including two children, were injured and brought to a local hospital.
The radical Islamic Taliban group has claimed responsibility for the suicide attack. However, Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi told the media that the number of policemen killed in the attack amounted to 15.
