One person was killed during clashes that took place in Athens on Thursday, a police source said.

“One man died of a heart attack in hospital,” the source said. According to earlier reports, 16 people have been hospitalized.

At least 200 anarchists attacked police with stones and Molotov cocktails in central Athens on Thursday but failed to disrupt peaceful protests against austerity measures. More than 40 people have been injured.

The riot took place on the second day of a 48-hour demonstration in Athens, which drew 50,000-80,000 union members and civil servants, police said. It is the biggest nationwide protest in the country since the onset of the crisis three years ago.

The event will continue until Thursday night when parliament is expected to vote on new spending cuts and layoffs, the main condition for receipt of a new tranche of the EU and IMF bailout.

The government is seeking new terms for its $158-billion EU-IMF bailout amid reports that the country might need additional aid.
