Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has arrived in Hawaii to attend an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Honolulu on November 12-13.
Medvedev is scheduled to have bilateral meetings with the leaders of Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Peru and Vietnam, as well as with representatives of the regional business communities in a broader context of the forum.
On top of his APEC agenda is a meeting with his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama on November 12. The presidents are expected to discuss the implementation of the new arms reduction treaty, the European missile defense, Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organization, and other issues.
“The participation in the APEC summit has a special significance in light of Russia’s forthcoming chairmanship of this regional association,” presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko said on Friday.
Russia will host the next APEC summit on September 8-9, 2012 in Vladivostok.
“Russia is ready to actively participate in international efforts to set up an equitable and fair architecture of global economy,” Prikhodko said.
“We intend to continue the steps to join integration processes in the region, considering the goals of our economic and social development and the obligations to our partners, especially in the framework of the Customs Union,” he said.
Russia has donated $3 million in March 2011 to APEC activities to support human security and development of science and technology in the Asia-Pacific region.
