Former Chernobyl cleanup workers on Wednesday took over the building of a regional pension fund in the city of Lvov, western Ukraine, in protest against the nonpayment of pensions.
About 100 members of a charity called Chernobyl Children of the Lvov Region overran the building to protest the authorities’ failure to comply with court rulings awarding them additional pensions, and to demand the payment of pension arrears.
On Tuesday, about 300 members of Chernobyl groups took over a pension fund building in Kharkov, eastern Ukraine.
Protests started after the Ukrainian parliament announced plans to cut social benefits for those involved in the clean-up effort following the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, the world's worst nuclear accident.
