Hackers apparently located in Russia attacked a water system in the US state of Illinois last week and damaged one of its pumps, the Washington Times said on Saturday quoting a report from the state fusion center.
The cyber attack had resulted in the burn out of a water pump caused by hackers using Russian IP addresses repeatedly switching the pump on and off, the “Public Water District Cyber Intrusion” report of Illinois Statewide Terrorism and Intelligence Center was quoted by the paper as saying.
The report also says the attackers got access using passwords stolen from the software vendor that sells the Industrial Control System (ICS).
The paper also quoted federal officials as saying they were investigating the incident, implying that the report could be wrong.
