There are two versions of the ballet La Sylphide. The first was created in France in 1832 by Filippo Taglioni for his daughter Marie. Pierre Lacotte revived this production on the Moscow stage.
The ballet La Sylphide marked the beginning of the era of Romantic ballet. The 1832 production of La Sylphide became a landmark in ballet history. Marie Taglioni was the first to perform in a tutu and ballerina shoes.
The revived La Sylphide premiered at Théâtre National de l'Opéra de Paris in 1972 where it was originally presented. Pierre Lacotte himself closely supervised the French production of his ballet.
Lacotte called La Sylphide “the ballet of surprises.” When asked whether there were any changes in the Moscow production, he said: “There are no changes, nor can there be any.”
“I was working at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theater for the first time in my life. The theater company is very good, and I enjoyed working there,” Pierre Lacotte said before the premiere.
