WORLD

*Ten people were killed in clashes in the southwestern Kazakh oil town of Zhanaozen, the country prosecutor general, Askhat Daulbayev, said in a statement.

*The second round of voting in presidential polls in the breakaway Moldovan republic of Transdnestr will take place on December 25, election officials said.

*Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said the former Soviet republc would build the best spaceship the world has ever seen.

*Turkmenistan's president, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, has registered to stand for reelection in next year's elections.

RUSSIA

*WTO trade ministers accepted Russia’s bid to join the World Trade Organization. The accession protocol was signed for Russia by Economic Development Minister Elvira Nabiullina and for the WTO, by its Director General Pascal Lamy.

*Rocked by mass opposition rallies, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin instructed the Finance Ministry and the Mass Communications Ministry to install web cameras at all polling stations.

*Russia’s Central Electoral Commission will consider the registration of eight self-promoted candidates to the forthcoming presidential elections, commission’s spokesman Nikolai Konkin said.

*Russia welcomes India’s intention to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and calls on member states to speed up the accession process, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a joint statement following talks in Moscow.

*Russia will develop a new liquid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile to overcome the U.S.’s prospective missile defense system, Strategic Missile Forces chief Lt. Gen. Sergei Karakayev said.

*Russia’s troubled Phobos-Grunt spacecraft will fall back to Earth in the period of January 6-19, Russia’s Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) said.
