Almost 30 percent of Russians decide against staying home after catching a cold and go to work, a survey conducted by the Russian Health and Social Development Ministry said on Monday.

Almost 30 percent of Russians decide against staying home after catching a cold and go to work, a survey conducted by the Russian Health and Social Development Ministry said on Monday.

“According to the ministry’s public internet survey, 28 percent of the respondents prefer to stay out of bed while ill, and 15 percent take sick leave,” the ministry said in a press release.

The rest of the 4,000 respondents, who took part in the survey, said everything depends on the circumstances whether to go to work or stay at home.

Some of those catching a cold and opting to go to work say that it is because they have “a responsible job,” while others say they do not want to lose part of their monthly wages by taking sick leave.

Some of those preferring to take sick leave say that it is better to stay at home just for a day instead of going to work and aggravating their health condition while others advise against going to work and infecting coworkers with a cold.

Flu and cold outbreaks often occur in Russia in the fall and early winter. Statistics show that some 1,000 Russians die from the flu annually.
