The next EU summit will take place on January 30, 2012, and will focus on employment, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said in a video address.
"Our next summit is already scheduled for January 30," he said, adding that the meeting would focus on employment in the European Union, where some countries may face zero economic growth and some even recession.
During the previous summit on December 8-9, European leaders agreed to deepen fiscal integration on the basis of a mechanism for enforcing budgetary and state debt discipline. The mechanism may envisage automatic penalties for eurozone countries that fail to comply with their spending targets.
Leaders oft the 17 eurozone countries, as well as nine non-euro EU members said they may join the treaty. The United Kingdom opposed the move.
