Belarus’s Tax Ministry asked the Justice Ministry on Wednesday to close the country’s Helsinki Committee office over tax evasion charges.
A committee spokesman denied the charges.
The Helsinki Committee of Belarus is the last human rights group in the former Soviet republic registered by the Ministry of Justice.
The committee has already received two official warnings from the Justice Ministry during the year. A third warning may serve as formal grounds for closure.
The committee monitors all election campaigns, offers expert assessment of high-profile cases and provides legal assistance to people in 11 cities throughout the country.
