Counterfeit alcohol poisoning led to death of 17 citizens on southern India during New Year celebration, IANS news agency said on Sunday quoting local government officials.
Some eight citizens are in hospitals in critical condition. Doctors consider the poisoning might be caused by methyl elicited in alcoholic beverages. Police arrested the sellers.
It is the second case of counterfeit alcohol poisoning in India in recent weeks. In mid-December 171 citizens died in West Bengal region in eastern India after visiting a low-price bar near railway station. The Indian authorities said it was the most mass alcohol poisoning in the country ever.
