Southern Siberia rattled by 4.2-magnitude aftershock

A 4.2-mangitude aftershock struck the southern Siberian Republic of Tuva on Monday, the regional emergencies center reported.

The aftershock occurred 130 km (80 miles) northeast of the village of Saryg-Sep in the Kaa-Khemsky district in central Tuva at 10:30 a.m. local time (02:30 GMT).

"The intensity of the tremor was 4.2 points in the epicenter and less than two points in populated areas," the emergencies center said.

There were no immediate reports on any destruction or casualties.

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit the republic of Tuva on December 27, causing no damage or casualties. The epicenter of the quake was registered at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) some 120 km (75 miles) to the east of the city of Kyzyl.

Russian seismologists have warned that there could be severe aftershocks during the week with a magnitude of up to 5.0.

A spokesman for the regional Emergencies Ministry said that local residents were warned about the possibility of aftershocks and were advised to leave their homes.
