Two people were killed and up to 39 injured on Monday as a result of a gas explosion at an Italian restaurant in southwestern Moscow, city healthcare department chief Leonid Pechatnikov said.
A liquid gas canister exploded in the kitchen of the Il Pittore restaurant, blowing out the windows and setting the building ablaze. The roof caved in.
Most of the damage was caused by flying glass shards and burns.
Thirty-two people were hospitalized.
At least 26 EMS vehicles were at the scene.
A criminal case has been opened on charges of negligent homicide and provision of improper and unsafe services.
The charges carry a penalty of up to 10 years.
