Russia’s Alexander Kudryavtsev suffered on Monday a straight sets defeat to Roger Federer of Switzerland in the first round of the 2012 Australian Open.
In the match that lasted 1 hour and 38 minutes, the 3-seed Swiss encountered a good resistance from the Russian, who has qualified for a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, but sliced through the next two sets to leave the score at 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.
“It was just tough against a guy who hits big and flat from both sides and takes a lot of chances,” the tournament’s web site quoted Federer as saying after the game.
Federer will face next Germany’s Andreas Beck, who defeated Eric Prodon of France to reach the second round of the tournament.
