A house in downtown Moscow that reputedly inspired famous Russian 20th century writer Mikhail Bulgakov has been put on sale for $42 million, a real estate agency announced on Wednesday.

The house at 12 Maly Vlasyevsky served as a prototype for the house of Margarita, the heroine of Bulgakov’s classic novel "The Master and Margarita," the agency said.

"The estate’s past is linked to great names of the 19th and 20th centuries. Isadora Duncan [a U.S.-born dancer considered to be the founder of modern dance] used to dance in its Blue Hall, and many experts on Bulgakov believed that this is where the famous writer 'lodged' Margarita,” the Century 21 West real estate agency said.

A company spokesman said the urban estate on 0.31 hectares, including a one-storey main building of over 1,500 square meters, auxiliary buildings, garage and a parking lot for 31 cars is now owned by “two Russian businessmen.”

The house was built it 1903 by merchant Ivan Korovin. Its architecture and design features various elements of Art Nouveau, with initial composition structure, facade decorations and elements of original interior design being preserved.
